Expensive fun: The iPad Pro M4 costs almost 3,700 euros when fully equipped

Anyone interested in an iPad Pro M4 with an OLED screen will pay at least, 1199 euros for the 11-inch model or 1,549 euros for the 13-inch model. This includes 256 GB of storage space, Apple's new entry-level size for professional tablets. But what is the maximum you can spend on the 2024 iPad Pro? As it turns out, a lot more: if you choose all the equipment options including accessories, the 13-inch model will cost a total of 3,687 euros and the 11-inch model, 2,938 euros. AppleCare+ device insurance can then be added for 159 or 179 euros (or 7.99 or 8.99 euros per month).

What's inside the dream iPad

Our configuration for both models includes 2 TByte of storage space, (presumably) 12 GB of RAM, the new "nano-textured glass" that promises "extremely low reflection", a 5G module as an eSIM, the Apple Pencil Pro and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. We are not bringing a trade-in device. As usual, Apple's additional storage space is particularly expensive. For 2 TByte on the 13-inch model of the iPad Pro M4, Apple would like an additional 2,759 euros, and, 2,409 euros on the 11-inch model (only Apple knows why the prices are different - memory is actually memory).

You pay 130 euros more for the nanotexture coating; despite the difference in display size, Apple makes no distinction between the two device variants. Apple charges an additional 250 euros for the 5G mobile module (also both variants) if you want more than just Wi-Fi. The Apple Pencil Pro costs 149 euros. If you want to buy the limited-function Apple Pencil with USB-C, you can do so for 60 euros less. Finally, Apple pays well for its revised keyboard and trackpad (Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro): Whether in white or black, it costs 349 (11-inch) or 399 euros (13-inch).

Would I be better off buying a Mac?

At these prices, the question arises whether you should go straight for a Mac. But it's not as light and slim, nor is it available in an 11-inch version. What's more, no other Apple device of this size has an OLED screen. Apple's new M4 SoC is also making its debut in the 2024 iPad Pro. It seems advisable to take a very close look at your own needs when configuring the device - and to consider whether you really need an all-in-one package at a high price.

One good thing about the current iPads is that they can finally be expanded using USB-C. Peripherals such as a USB-C network adapter are working on this, as are external SSDs or hard disks. So you don't necessarily have to pay Apple's moon prices for the - certainly very fast - internal flash memory, especially as apps such as Final Cut Pro will soon be able to edit projects directly on external media.
