AMD and Intel's processor sales have been on the rise since summer 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2024, they together sold around 69 million models for desktop PCs and notebooks. This was 7.8 percent more than in the third quarter and 4.6 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

The figures come from market researcher Jon Peddie Research, which does not, however, provide any information on the manufacturers' shares. In the third quarter, AMD's market share for desktop PCs was 28.7 percent; for notebooks it was 22.3 percent. Jon Peddie does not count ARM processors.

In Germany, Mindfactory reports sales figures in its own online store. This is particularly popular with hobbyists who assemble their own desktop PCs. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming processor has been particularly popular there for months, with more than 18,000 sales in total. According to the figures, a good 90 percent of desktop CPUs sold in January came from AMD.

Unlike many other market observers, Jon Peddie continues to provide distribution figures between desktop PCs and notebooks. The latter remain the most important client business segment for AMD and Intel, with a share of 69 percent. The Mindfactory figures are therefore far from reflecting the overall situation.

Both AMD and Intel are currently experiencing supply problems. In the case of Ryzen, the X3D models with extra cache are affected. The Ryzen 9 9800X3D (ab 549,90 €) is now readily available again, but German retailers are still charging prices above AMD's recommended retail price. The predecessor Ryzen 7 7800X3D (ab 468 €) has become almost 50 percent pricier since the summer of 2024.

Intel introduced the 65-watt Core Ultra 200S (Arrow Lake) models in January 2025, which are still only partially available and too expensive. The cheapest processor in this series is the Core Ultra 5 225F (ab 249,01 €) for well over 200 euros.
