Error when backing up iPhone photos: iOS 18 bug causes frustration
Due to the sporadic problem, all editing steps are lost because a photo cannot be saved. A workaround will help until the Apple fix.
A persistent bug is annoying iPhone photographers: since the release of iOS 18 in September, there have been increasing reports of problems when editing photos. After editing, Apple's Photos app may no longer be able to save the changes. Affected users only receive the unhelpful warning "An error occurred while saving this photo. Try again later." (There was an error saving this photo. Please try again later.).
The process can then only be canceled, but all editing steps that have just been carried out will be lost. If you try again later, the error usually occurs , users note.
Primarily reports from iPhone 16 users
Most of the problem reports to date have come from owners of an iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro, although the bug also appears to occur on older iPhone model series. The memory refusal cannot be observed with every photo, and often only occurs sporadically – but this makes it all the more frustrating.
The first updates provided by Apple for iOS 18 – including iOS 18.1 – did not eliminate the error, which was also repeatedly noticeable on an iPhone 16 Pro from the "Mac & i" editorial team. It remains unclear how many users are ultimately affected. There have also been reports of such an error message on older iOS versions, but usually only to a limited extent.
Apple also seems to be aware of the problem. According to developers, the bug still occurred in the second beta of iOS 18.2. Users of the public operating system beta also report this. In contrast, editing and saving photos in the latest third developer beta seems to be working again without any problems.
Workaround until the release of iOS 18.2
Until Apple documents the bug and releases a fix, a workaround will help: If you create a duplicate of the photo without the Live Photo component in the Photos app, this can usually be edited as normal. Recordings in which the Live Photo function was directly switched off also do not appear to trigger the bug. The manufacturer is expected to release iOS version 18.2 to the general public for download in the first half of December.
