The Indian Army has equipped a hexacopter drone with a machine gun for use in combat operations. This was announced by the Indian Army's Western Command on Saturday on X (formerly Twitter) in a video. The system, called Sirin Hexadrone and built by the Indian company Ikran Aerospace, was presented at a military shooting event. The drone can also be equipped with other small arms such as grenade launchers and mortars.
The Sirin Hexadrone includes a target detection and classification system. Thanks to AI algorithms, the drone is able to recognize and select targets independently. This makes it possible, for example, to engage military targets with a high degree of precision.
Keeping losses low
The hexacopter is controlled via encrypted communication. Enemy jamming and spoofing attempts should therefore be reliably prevented. The payload is around one kilogram. This means that various small arms can be attached to the system to adapt the drone to different mission scenarios. The drone can thus fly into combat zones without soldiers having to be deployed. The aim is to minimize the number of own losses.
The Sirin Hexadrone can also be used for military reconnaissance purposes. The drone has a fairly long flight duration of around 45 minutes.
