From today, Monday, Slack will delete messages and data older than one year for all users of the free service. Anyone who wants to retain access to all messages and files must switch to a paid subscription.

The provider emphasizes that once deleted, messages, files and other content are irretrievably lost. Even if you switch to a paid subscription, you will no longer have access to data that has already been deleted.

In the free starter package, messages and attached files were previously stored indefinitely, but users only had full access to them for 90 days. By switching to a paid subscription, it was possible to regain access to old data, even if it was older than one year.

The communication platform Slack had already announced this change to its terms and conditions for free workspaces at the end of June. It will take effect from August 26, 2024, and files and messages older than one year will be deleted from this date.

The free entry-level offer includes one workspace and access to all data that is not older than 90 days. In the paid subscriptions, which cost from 8.25 euros per month, access is unlimited. There are also other features such as group messages with external participants and unlimited workflows.

Slack has been part of Salesforce since 2021.
