Microsoft brings Recall back to CoPilot+ PCs in October – for Insiders
MIcrosoft's AI memory function Recall will be available again to owners of Copilot+ PCs from October. As an insider preview version.
Microsoft is bringing back the AI-supported computer memory Recall. From October, Copilot+ PC owners participating in the Windows Insider Program will be able to test the function again.
Microsoft has provided a corresponding update to the blog post from June on Recall, which traces the eventful history of the controversial function. "With the goal of providing our customers with a trusted and secure Recall experience on Copilot+ PCs, we're announcing that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders in October," the company now states there. They have adapted the release approach to leverage valuable expertise from the Windows Insider community before making Recall available to all Copilot+ PCs.
Security first and foremost
Keeping the company's motto of putting security first, Microsoft continues: "Security remains our top priority and when Recall is ready for Windows Insiders in October, we will publish a blog post with more details".
Microsoft had originally planned to ship Recall enabled by default for all Copilot+ PCs. Recall regularly saves screenshots, analyzes and correlates them using AI and makes the results searchable. This has caused particular concern that this could represent a profound invasion of privacy. Microsoft therefore backed down at the beginning of June. Recall then became an opt-in feature that interested parties must first activate themselves. The developers have also tweaked encryption and privacy: screenshots will only be stored in encrypted form, and searches will only be possible after confirmation by Windows Hello. In managed environments, admins should only be able to deactivate the function centrally, but not activate it.

First experiences with Recall
Originally, Recall was supposed to become generally available again quickly, around mid-June this year. However, Microsoft decided against this and announced that only participants in the Windows Insider Program would have access to the Recall preview for now. However, it remained unclear at the time exactly when this would happen.
