Ryzen: Market share for AMD's desktop CPUs at record level
AMD is taking market share from Intel in desktop PCs. However, the Ryzen 7000 only played a minor role.

AMD's desktop processor division is in a better position than it has been for two decades. According to Mercury Research, its market share rose to 23.9% in the first quarter of 2024. This may even be a company record: There are no figures from 2006 broken down by deployment location; overall, AMD managed a high of 25.2 percent with the Athlons back then. Desktop PCs are said to have been in the region of 20 percent at the time.
According to Mercury Research, AMD sold roughly as many desktop processors at the beginning of 2024 as it did in the fourth quarter of 2023. This is atypical due to the Christmas business and the US vacation season. Intel's business, on the other hand, was seasonal, with its desktop market share falling from 80.2 to 76.1 percent at the turn of the year.
At AMD, the new Ryzen 8000G (Hawk Point, Zen 4) combo processors for the AM5 platform and the older Ryzen 5000 (Vermeer, Zen 3) for AM4 mainboards are said to have sold particularly well. AMD's currently fastest desktop models Ryzen 7000, on the other hand, only played a minor role.

Down for notebooks, up for servers
The notebook market is said to have behaved normally. AMD's sales fell slightly more than Intel's, causing AMD's market share to drop back below the 20 percent mark to 19.3 percent. At Intel, entry-level processors such as the N100 and N200 models and older Celerons are said to have been particularly strong.
Server CPUs behaved in exactly the opposite way. Here, too, the decline was typical for the season, but lower for AMD than for Intel. As a result, AMD's market share rose to a new record high of 23.6 percent. Intel's regained market share at the end of 2024 thus remains a one-off event for the time being. A positive development for AMD: unlike Intel, the company is expected to have sold more server processors at the start of 2024 than a year earlier. Mercury Research excludes the Instinct MI300A server combo processors – they combine 24 Zen 4 cores with a fast CDNA3 accelerator. With them, AMD's market share was even higher.
Consoles collapse
If the CPUs for desktop PCs, notebooks and servers are added together, AMD was able to increase slightly to 20.8 percent. Only when other device classes such as consoles and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are included does AMD's market share collapse.
According to Mercury Research, console chips, such as for the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, have fallen "dramatically". AMD is hardly represented in IoT devices, and previous inventory surpluses distort the annual comparison. In nominal terms, AMD's total x86 market share fell from 34.6 to 26.1 percent within a year.
Meanwhile, market observers suspect that the Chinese manufacturer Zhaoxin was able to significantly expand its market share in China, but do not know any more precise figures. Zhaoxin is allowed to design processors with VIA's x86 license. China is currently promoting the use of domestic processors in order to make itself less dependent on foreign countries.
