Weltbild insolvency: deadline for backing up e-books extended
Due to the Weltbild insolvency, buyers are at risk of losing their purchased e-books. However, the provider has now extended the deadline for backing up.
Buyers of e-books and audiobooks at Weltbild have a little more time to back up their content. The insolvent bookseller had originally set a deadline of August 31 for users to back up e-books on their PC and link them to a library. In an updated FAQ, however, Weltbild now writes that users still have until September 30.
Weltbild will cease business operations on August 31 due to insolvency. The company informed buyers of e-books and audiobooks a few weeks ago that they would no longer be able to download their content after this date. By extending the deadline, users have more time to act. However, this does not change the core problem: anyone who does not back up their e-books by the deadline can permanently lose access.
Local backup on PC
Backing up content is relatively simple: users must first open the Tolino Webreader in their browser and log in. Users then log in with their Weltbild customer account and find their content under "My books" and "My audiobooks". The files stored there can be downloaded individually via the three dots below the title image and saved locally on the PC.
Because the e-books are available in the widely used EPUB format, you have many options with them: On the PC, you can open EPUBs with Adobe Reader and numerous other programs, for example, but Amazon's Kindle reader can also handle EPUBs. Most buyers of e-books at Weltbild have a Tolino e-reader, on which the files can also be read once they have been saved.
Library linking
The most convenient way is to upload the e-books and audio books to the Tolino cloud in addition to the local backup so that they remain available on the Tolino reader without any detours. Tolino therefore recommends the so-called library link, which allows you to combine the libraries of different Tolino stores. Tolino provides instructions on its website. By linking libraries, the Weltbild library is stored in the Tolino cloud and will therefore remain accessible in the future.
Weltbild filed for insolvency on June 10 and the search for an investor failed. The book retailer Thalia, which once founded the Tolino brand with Weltbild, is now considering purchasing Weltbild's books, e-books and e-readers product division.
