Paul Baran war Anfang der 60er intensiv damit befasst, eine
Netzwerkstruktur zur entwickeln, die im Kriegsfall überlebensfähig
ist. Redundante Knoten, das Aufteilen der Informationen in Pakete und
das automatische Routing hat er beschrieben und diese Leistung
gleichzeitig als nichts Besonderes hingestellt. "It just happened to
be the only solution I could think of" habe ich daher mit "Es war die
einzige Lösung, die ich denken konnte" übersetzt, weil in diesem
gesamten Entwicklungsprozess für ihn die Praktikabilität im
Vordergrund stand. Die Idee denkt den Ingenieur, der von einem
technischen Ansatz ausgeht.
In dem ebenfalls zitierten Kathedralen-Text kommt dies ganz gut zum
Ausdruck, wenn Baran sagt:
"What I did not appreciate at the time was the commonality of the
alternative approaches to building such networks. I simply had
approached building the network as an engineer. I assumed that there
would be many different ways of
building such networks, each with interesting, new and different
properties. I viewed my work as an existence proof. Ibelieved this
was not the only way to build such networks. As it was only the first
one I considered in detail, I felt that there must be totally
different ways to build better networks."
