Fritzbox top models: 7690 comes for 329 euros, 5690 Pro for 359 euros
AVM is launching two new routers this month: the top DSL model Fritzbox 7690 and the combination model Fritzbox 5690 Pro.

The wait is over: AVM has announced the imminent availability of the two Fritzbox routers 7690 (DSL) and 5690 Pro (DSL + fiber optics). Dealers are to start selling the Fritzbox 7690 as the new top model for DSL connections today. The Fritzbox 5690 Pro will follow in the course of the month.
The recommended retail prices are 329 euros for the 7690 model and 359 euros for the 5690 device. The routers should soon appear in the price comparison.
The latter model was actually due to be released at the end of 2023, but there have been repeated delays. Huawei's patent lawsuit is likely to have played a role – the two companies have now reached an agreement. This means that interested parties do not have to fear any legal uncertainty when making a purchase.

Both routers are capable of Wi-Fi 7, but only the Fritzbox 5690 Pro operates in the 6 GHz band, in addition to the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. The Fritzbox 7690 nevertheless promises high transmission rates with 4-stream MIMO in the two lower bands. Speed advantages over its predecessors are said to be particularly noticeable for VPN connections with Wireguard and IPsec.
The Fritzboxes also function as a control center for the smart home. In addition to DECT ULE, they also support the more common Zigbee standard; AVM will add Matter support via a firmware update.

For DSL users and those with fiber optics in mind
The Fritzbox 5690 works on both fiber optic and DSL lines. The model has both a DSL modem and an SFP slot for optical modules. It has 2.5 Gbit/s on passive GPON connections and 1 Gbit/s on active AON connections.
The router is primarily intended for people who are still using a DSL connection but want to switch to fiber optics in the future. The Fritzbox 5690 Pro comes with the latest router technology and you no longer need to purchase a replacement when switching.
In the case of the Fritzbox 7690, one of the two 2.5 Gbit/s ports also functions as a WAN connection. This means that a fiber optic modem can be connected upstream if required when the connection is converted.
