Hello Mr Steve Jobs,
this feedback is for the whole iPod range introduced in Sept. 07:
What kind of politics is Apple making? On one side, you talk about
freeing Music from DRM (see "Thoughts on music" from February 2007
[1]) which really impressed me and on the other hand customers who
like to use their (new) iPods with alternative music software like
Amarok [2], Rhythmbox [3], gtkpod [4] or firmwares like Rockbox [5],
... are suddenly locked out [6],[7]. I mean: We Linux-users had a
hard time using iPods anyway, but at least we somehow managed with
the help of the opensource community - THE opensource community YOU
pretend to support (Darwin, KHTML, ...). Maybe we Linux-users would
even BUY DRM-free music from ITMS if we had an appropriate software
for it, but as for now Microsoft is the wolf, and Apple is a wolf in
sheep's clothing.
I tell you what: A "honest" iPod would have additional OGG Vorbis
and/or flac support, Quicktime and iTunes as well with at least
DRM-free ITMS music being also available in these formats. If you
then also open ITMS so that alternative music software would be able
to BUY music from Apple, you would GAIN customers instead of loosing
them.
I wonder: What do you have to loose? Haven't you learned from
Microsoft? Do you want to make the same mistakes? Are these
(product)Red iPods NOTHING more than a marketing gag?
Shame on you, Mr Jobs. I thought you were ABLE to LIVE the Apple
motto ... "think different". Obvioulsy this is not the case
