AI: Google expands Gemini with topic-based chatbots and new image generator

Google has announced two new features for its AI assistant Gemini, which will be available in stages with immediate effect. Gems are "customized versions of Gemini" that can serve as experts for specific topics specified by the user. At the same time, the AI image generator "Imagen" is also returning. The third version can once again create images of people, albeit with restrictions.

In February of this year, Google suspended Gemini image generation of people after AI inaccuracies. For example, the artificial intelligence (AI) had created images of people of Asian and African origin in response to a request for German soldiers in 1943. Google has apparently rectified this with Imagen 3. However, it should not be possible to generate photorealistic images of famous people or minors, or excessive depictions of violence or sexual content.

Imagen 3 can even generate AI images in different styles from a few given words. With a detailed description, however, the results should better match the specifications. As before, the images are watermarked so that they can be identified as AI-generated. The AI image generator will be available within the next few days in all Gemini apps and in all available languages, including the free version, as Google writes. However, AI-generated images of people will initially be limited to the Advanced, Business and Enterprise versions of Gemini and only in English.

Gems as topic-based AI chatbots

Gems are practically topic-based AI chatbots that the user can save after creating them for the first time so that they can return to this topic later. Gemini saves the previous conversations and information about them so that the individual Gems can act like experts in this area. The user can specify purpose and goals as well as behavior and rules, for example to collect ideas or get support for longer-term projects.

Google provides various ready-made Gems on different topics to get you started, such as a learning aid, a creative partner for more inspiration, a career advisor, a writing assistant and a coding assistant for support with programming.

However, the Gems will not be available in the free private version of Gemini, but only for Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise, but in more than 150 countries and also in German.
