AMD confirms Radeon RX 8000 for early 2025

AMD makes previous rumors official: New graphics cards with RDNA4 architecture will no longer be available in 2024. In the analyst conference on the latest quarterly figures, AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed a launch in early 2025. The graphics cards will probably be sold as the Radeon RX 8000.

The company has not yet revealed many details. "In addition to a significant increase in gaming performance, RDNA 4 offers significantly higher ray tracing performance and new AI features," says Su. A recordingof the analyst conference is available on the manufacturer's website, a transcript at Seeking Alpha. AMD has already confirmed in advance that the next series will not include high-end models – affordable graphics cards should give the company more market share.

Intelligent upscaling

In the meantime, AMD can simply start with ray tracing and AI functions. The Radeon RX 7000 already has AI computing units, so-called AI accelerators, which have hardly been of any use in games in particular. Unlike Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), AMD's upscaler FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) does not yet use any AI algorithms. Instead, a filter and temporal aliasing are used to process the frames. Only with FSR4 will an AI model be used to upscale the image content.

Ray tracing graphics effects have so far caused the frame rate on Radeon graphics cards to drop more than on Nvidia's GeForce GPUs, primarily because more calculations run on the standard shader cores: The ray tracing units at AMD take over the intersection calculations between the rays and the bounding volume hierarchy (BVH) or the polygons – the step-by-step traversal of the BVH, however, must advance the normal shader cores – this is still done within the RT cores at Nvidia.

AMD could modify its own GPUs accordingly. The Playstation 5 Pro is already borrowing from RDNA4 and should render ray tracing effects two to three times faster than the previous PS5. Sony has not yet gone into the architectural details.

The CES electronics trade fair from January 7 to 10 would be a suitable opportunity to announce graphics cards. Allegedly, Radeons with the Navi-48 GPU will make the start, followed by cheaper models with Navi 44 in the second quarter. Nvidia may announce the first GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards at CES.
