Android 15 update: Will Gboard soon be able to auto-correct entire sentences?
There are indications that Google's Gboard keyboard will be able to correct entire sentences for its users and have other functions after the next major update.
Google's Gboard keyboard will soon be able to correct not just whole words, but whole sentences – is one of several new functions that could be launched when developers get their app ready for Android 15. The source code of the current Gboard beta has given rise to speculation.
With Gboard, Google offers its own on-screen keyboard for Android and iOS devices. With over five billion downloads in the Google Play Store, it is one of the most popular apps for Android. One of the special features of Gboard is that the autocorrect word suggestions can also be based on Google searches.
Major Gboard update expected for Android 15
The new Android version 15 , which Google has announced will be released for Samsung, Pixel and other devices "in the coming weeks", is also expected to include a major update for Gboard. Clues are provided by the Android Authority portal, which took a close look at the source code of the current Gboard beta and found several exciting clues. Although the associated possible innovations are not yet fixed, the source code is a strong indication of this.
The most interesting new feature is a function that checks entire sentences for errors and corrects them automatically, instead of just offering suitable words for completion and automatic corrections for spelling and grammar when writing, as was previously the case. Two lines in the beta code are crucial for this. They should offer the user a choice: Either to correct words only or words and sentences automatically.
Further new functions possible
The whole thing is very reminiscent of the proofreading function that Gboard introduced last year. If Gboard finds errors, a Fix problem button is displayed in the suggestion bar. However, it remains to be seen whether the potential new function will behave in a similar way. The Gboard function of switching between keyboard layouts for different languages using the space bar could also change. The beta source code suggests that a new, more practical button will be added with the Android 15 update.
There could also be a new button in the toolbar in the next version that can be used to edit the arrangement of the icons. A first video of this can be seen in the Android Authority report.
