Carbon Copy Cloner reaches version 7: Complete Mac backup becomes simpler
Version 7 of the macOS backup tool CCC comes with new wizards, improved snapshot configuration and much more.

Apple's standard backup tool on the Mac has been Time Machine since 2007. This function allows a backup to be created automatically in the background. However, the on-board tool has some limitations, which is why professionals like to carry out complete backups of their Apple computers in parallel. The most popular tools in this area include Superduper! from Shirt Pocket and Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software. The latter has now been released in an improved version 7.
Backups of iPhone data
This version has a whole range of new usability features. For example, there are now several new wizards to help you set up the backup. These include a wizard for preparing the backup medium, a more detailed setup of snapshots, including the option to search through them, and an easy way to create encrypted backups. Cloud storage media is supported, you can add notes to backups, and it is now easier to back up files and media from iOS devices to the Mac. (There is also a dedicated companion app for making data available on the local network).
Bombich Software has also tweaked the automatic backups. You can now specify when they should start and under what conditions. New "product tours" give new users an overview of the functions in CCC. A simulator for the snapshot policy has also been integrated, which can be used to check what would be removed automatically. Problem bootable backup
It should be noted that although CCC can still be used to create bootable backups, these are not always reliable, especially with Apple Silicon machines, as the creation must rely on Apple's proprietary replication tool asr. For example, the external medium should always be connected to the computer via Thunderbolt if you are using macOS 14 alias Ventura. In addition, the boot process will fail if the internal SSD is no longer accessible. Bombich Software therefore recommends creating a backup without the operating system – which is also the standard method. You can then reinstall macOS on the internal SSD and restore the backup using the migration assistant as part of the setup.
The full version of Carbon Copy Cloner 7 costs 57.18 euros. The upgrade discount for users of older versions is 25 percent for CCC 5 and 50 percent for CCC 6. Older versions must be upgraded at full price. Anyone who purchased CCC 6 on or after January 1, 2024 can upgrade to CCC 7 free of charge.
