Charging limit in iOS 18: How to better protect the battery

With the new iPhone operating system, Apple is expanding the energy settings. This should help to make the battery last longer.

Apple has tweaked the battery saving functions as part of iOS 18. From iPhone 15 onwards, it is now possible to define different maximum charge levels (charge limits). Previously, the threshold was stubbornly set to 80 percent (if desired), which was not enough for many users who had a long day ahead of them and sometimes made them nervous.

With iOS 18 and an iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max as well as an iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, there is a new slider in the battery settings (via system settings). Here you can set the charging limit to 80, 85, 90 or 95 percent. The actual message is that 80 percent is a good maximum charge to protect the battery – but a little more juice is also helpful. It is of central importance that the battery is not fully charged if possible. "This can preserve the life of the battery," says Apple.

Conveniently, the decision does not have to be made entirely from scratch. Under the new controller, Apple provides information on the charge recommended by the iPhone itself. "Based on your iPhone habits, we recommend a charge limit of X percent," it says. Of course, even machine learning can't do magic – so the device doesn't know when longer days are coming up during the week. Fortunately, the charging limit can then be switched off completely.

Apple has changed the internal structure of the battery in its iPhone 16. According to media reports, it can be removed with a low voltage instead of directly via the adhesive strips (pull tabs). A 9-volt battery is sufficient. However, this only applies to the 16 and 16 Plus models. However, it should now also be easier to repair the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models.

However, it is unfortunate that Apple has increased the price of replacement batteries for certain models. Without AppleCare+ insurance, you now pay 109 euros for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, and 135 euros for the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. For the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus it was still 109 euros and for the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max it was also –, so the Pro models will cost 26 euros more.
