GitHub has announced that it has added the Chinese large language model DeepSeek-R1 to the supported LLMs in GitHub Models. GitHub Models is a catalog and playground for artificial intelligence (AI) models where developers can experiment with AI features.
GitHub Models is currently in preview status and is not designed for use in production. Use is free of charge until certain rate limits are reached, i.e., maximum requests per minute and per day as well as the token per request.
Using DeepSeek in GitHub Models
GitHub Models now provides a connection to DeepSeek-R1, a 671 billion parameter reasoning model with a focus on deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision. The open-source model can be used, compared and implemented in the Playground or via API. The differences to other available large language models, for example from OpenAI, can be viewed in direct comparison:

All models available in GitHub Models are listed in the GitHub Marketplace. Further information on the new implementation of DeepSeek can be found in a blog entry.
Uproar over DeepSeek
The Chinese company DeepSeek is currently causing a stir, has caused Nvidia's stock market value to plummet, and is being investigated by Microsoft and OpenAI for a violation of the OpenAI terms of use. Nevertheless, Microsoft has now introduced DeepSeek-R1 in both Azure and GitHub.
