Eclipse Theia 1.52 accelerates the Theia IDE
The release brings new features for the Theia IDE as well as compatibility with VS Code and is the first release candidate for the next community version.

The EclipseSource team has announced the release of Eclipse Theia 1.52. The open source platform, which is used to create development environments and tools for the web and desktop, has received 47 pull requests in the past month. Among other things, there are updates for the Theia IDE, which completed the beta phase last month with version 1.51. It should now start faster and have improved support for Visual Studio code extensions.
Eclipse Theia 1.52 is also the first release candidate for the next community release 2024-08. The community edition will only be released every three months with a stronger focus on stability and compatibility.
Theia IDE - faster and more compatible with VS code extensions
The Eclipse Theia IDE (formerly Theia Blueprint) is based on the Theia platform and is available for cloud and desktop. It is an extensible framework written in TypeScript and is designed to enable the development of complete cloud and desktop IDEs and tools.
Version 1.52 of the Theia IDE should have a significantly reduced startup time on most systems. Based on user feedback, the development team has also improved support for several extensions for Microsoft's source code editor Visual Studio Code. Both Eclipse Theia and the Theia IDE based on it can handle over 3000 VS Code extensions that are available via the Open VSX Registry. Compatibility with the extensions has been increased to version 1.91.1 in this release.
Splendid colors in the terminal
Eclipse Theia presents a further innovation with regard to terminals: there the difficulty could arise that the display was limited to eight colors. A new feature ensures the correct settings of the terminal environment variables terminfo[colors] and COLORTERM to activate 256 colors and True Color. Users should therefore notice more accurate colors in the terminal for both the desktop and web versions of Theia as well as the Theia IDE.

These and other new features in version 1.52 can be found on the EclipseSource blog. There is also a note that Theia will soon discontinue support for the JavaScript runtime Node.js 16, and there is also talk of switching away from the JavaScript package manager yarn version 1. Theia users are invited to provide feedback on these plans for the open source project.
