Fast wireless charging: What you need to consider with iPhone 16 & Co.
Apple's new iPhones and the Apple Watch Series 10 offer improvements in charging time. However, this requires some investment.
One of the new features of the recently released iPhone 16 models and the Apple Watch Series 10 is the fact that Apple has reduced wireless charging times. The maximum power consumption has also been increased. This has many advantages in practice: For example, the smartphone is – fully charged more quickly before a long journey –, while the computer watch still gets enough juice for sleep tracking even after adequate sports sessions. However, Apple has once again not implemented its wireless fast charging "out of the box". Instead, it requires accessories, some of which are probably not yet available to any user. An overview.
iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max: what you need for fast charging
All four iPhone 16 devices support a new, proprietary MagSafe standard. Instead of just 7.5 watts (Qi) or 15 watts (Qi2), the devices charge with up to 25 watts of power. Apple has therefore anticipated a "Qi3" that does not yet exist. However, two things are needed for this to work: a completely new MagSafe charger on the USB-C cable, which costs at least 49 euros (1 meter) or 59 euros (2 meters) – and a power supply unit that can handle at least 30 watts.
No customer will have purchased the MagSafe charger in advance, as it only came onto the market with the iPhone 16 – and is actually the ideal product to put in the box. However, many users are likely to already have 30-watt power supplies. Apple's standard power supply costs 45 euros. As always, MagSafe is always slower than charging by cable – and not necessarily better for battery life due to the heat generated. An iPhone 16 Pro should draw around 30 watts as standard – but a maximum of 40 watts has also been measured.
Apple Watch Series 10: For a quick recharge in between
With the Apple Watch Series 10, you can now recharge up to 80 percent of the battery capacity in 30 minutes. The computer watch should normally last a day.
For faster charging, however, a "magnetic fast charger" must be available – plus a power supply unit with at least 20 watts. Apple wants 29 euros for the charging puck separately, the 20-watt power supply costs 25 euros. Again, most users are likely to already have the power supply unit, and the Fast Charger is commendably already included in the packaging.
