Photo features: What Apple is planning for the iPhone 16
Better cameras for the standard models, a new button and better optics: Apple obviously has a lot planned for the iPhone 16 in terms of photography.

Now that the date for this year's iPhone keynote seems to have been set, it's time to look at the details of the new devices. The iPhone 16 is likely to include a whole range of new photography features. This time, the rumor mill claims that these will not only affect the Pro models, but also the standard devices. This is what AppleInsider writes.
Macro for Standard and Plus
The macro mode from the Pro models is set to arrive on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus for the first time. In addition, the aperture of the ultra-wide-angle lenses will be increased from F/2.4 to F/2.2 to get more out of low light. The main image sensor on the back with 48 megapixels and F/1.6 is reportedly unchanged. The main sensor of the Pro and Pro Max models is also said to remain the same (48 megapixels, F/1.78), although the iPhone 16 Pro adopts the 5X tetraprism telephoto lens from the iPhone 15 Pro Max (currently: 3X).
The ultra-wide-angle cameras of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will reportedly both have 48 megapixels and allow pixel binning. The aperture is now probably F/2.2 for better handling of low light and the sensor has ProRAW support for the first time. Finally, according to the report, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max now also support 3K videos with up to 120 frames per second and Apple wants to support JPEG-XL as a new image format, which will then be added to HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRAW and ProRAW Max.
New capture button with many features
Finally, at least iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will have their own button for photography for the first time, the so-called Capture button. However, this could also end up in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. The button apparently works capacitively. It should be possible to press it in several stages, for example to trigger the autofocus in advance.
It is also conceivable that the button can be "swiped", for example to change the brightness. Apple is apparently working on an API that will allow external developers to use the button. So far, the Pro models already have an extra button, the so-called Action Button. The new iPhones will probably be unveiled on September 10; the device will then go on sale on September 20.
