Gamescom opening: "Mafia", "Civilization 7" and "Borderlands 4"
The Gamescom opening brought announcements such as "Borderlands 4" and "Mafia: The Old Country" and even brought Peter Molyneux back to the big stage.

Unlike last year, Geoff Keighley's Gamescom opening had a few new announcements to offer this time. On the evening of August 20, the show unveiled "Borderlands 4", "Mafia: The Old Country" and "Reanimal" from the makers of "Little Nightmares", among others.
While Sony and Nintendo are skipping Gamescom this year, the show was more important for Microsoft. Peter Molyneux, an old acquaintance, even returned to the world of "real video games" after having mainly dealt with mobile games and NFTs.
"Civilization 7"
Announced at the Summer Game Fest, "Civilization 7" by Fireaxis returns to a realistic graphic style. The trailer at least gave the impression that garish colors and exaggerated proportions are a thing of the past. In addition to ancient and medieval cities, the video also showed tanks and rocket launches. In a separate announcement, the developers promise improvements such as a simpler tutorial or the movement of entire armies as a unit. "Civilization 7" will be released on 11 February 2025 for PC and consoles. Fans of the series should be pleased that the publisher 2K's unpopular launcher will no longer be used.

"Mafia: The Old Country"
With "Mafia: The Old Country" from developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K, an oldie of the open action adventure returns. In keeping with the name, the story revolves around the cradle of the organization: the brutal underworld in 19th century Sicily. A teaser trailer in game graphics only briefly hinted at the story. More will be revealed in December 2024. The game will be released in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

"Borderlands 4"
After numerous allusions by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, "Borderlands 4" is becoming a reality. No gameplay of the "ultimate looter shooter" planned for 2025 was shown in the announcement. Instead, publisher 2K only showed render scenes. The player takes on the role of an exterminator who shoots everything that crosses his path in search of a secret alien treasure - according to the brief description on Steam. "Borderlands 4" will be released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 and is the first game from Gearbox after the takeover by Take-Two.

"Masters of Albion"
After legendary games such as "Populus" and less popular mobile titles, Peter Molyneux announced his return at Gamescom. The deliberately silly God Game "Masters of Albion" is being created with a 20-strong team and some industry veterans. In the PC title, players can customize towns, houses and items during the day, including crazy things like breadblade swords and rat pie. At night, the aim is to fight red-eyed monsters, which can be hit by meteorites, among other things. The title is set to introduce some new features, but will also take up concepts from "Dungeon Keeper", "Black & White" and "Fable". A date is not yet known.

"Batman: Arkham Shadow"
Warner finally showed game scenes from Batman's first big VR adventure "Batman: Arkham Shadow". Meta's studio Camouflaj, which has already developed Iron Man VR, gave a first look at Bruce Wayne's punch combos, air attacks, sneak kills and gadgets, including a pistol with explosive ammunition. With the help of the glowing Detective Vision, clues are revealed in puzzles. The structure of interconnected levels is based on the previous parts. The hunt for the Rat King takes place between Arkham Asylum and its prequel, for example in the Bowery district or the Monarch movie theater. "Batman: Arkham Shadow" will be released in October 2024 exclusively for Meta Quest 3.

What else is worth mentioning
- "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" is also coming to Playstation 5 in spring 2025, while PC and Xbox will see it on December 9, 2024.
- In Techland's newly announced "Dying Light and the Beast", you apparently not only play as a human, but also as a monster.
- "Starfield" players will receive the free off-road vehicle "Rev-8" tonight - and the DLC "Shattered Space" has a release date of September 30.
- The newly announced "Reanimal" from Tarsier Studios looks a lot more graphically elaborate than "Little Nightmare 3" from the same developer.
- The game scenes of"Age of Mythology: Retold" look much crazier than other strategy games.
