Hewlett Packard Enterprises has announced the release of VM Essentials virtualization management software. It is offered as part of the HPE Private Cloud and as a standalone program. This means that VM Essentials also supports third-party platforms and in-house servers in companies. HPE's VME hypervisor as well as KVM and VMware-based virtual machines can be managed with the December release. An option to migrate vSphere instances to private cloud environments is planned for the coming year.

For the migration and management functions, HPE relies on the hybrid cloud management of Morpheus Data, which the company acquired last year. HPE supports its own software in VM Essentials, including Zerto, OpsRamp and Cloudphysics. External backup and recovery tools from Cohesity and Commwall are also connected to the management software. They are licensed on a per-socket basis; specific prices are not yet known.

With VM Essentials, HPE is targeting customers who are looking for an alternative as a result of VMware's price increases. Almost half of those affected reported a doubling of prices, 15 percent reported a tenfold increase. As a result, there has recently been a high willingness to switch. Other companies such as Nutanix and Veeam had also previously expanded their portfolios in order to win over VMware customers.

Alongside VM Essentials, HPE announced an innovation for customers of the GreenLake Cloud. In future, it can be used in an isolated mode without a connection to the Internet. In this way, HPE aims to meet the security requirements of organizations. Large customers will receive individual offers for special requirements.

Details of the announcements can be found at HPE.
