Logitech denies the "Forever Mouse" with subscription payment
In an interview, the Logitech boss dreamed of a subscription mouse. The company emphasizes that such a product is not planned.
Logitech's new boss Hanneke Faber wants to raise the average price people spend on a PC mouse in the long term. She said this in an interview with The Verge and shared a bit of the inside story. An employee had shown her an "eternal mouse" that she obviously liked:
"I’m very intrigued. The other day, in Ireland, in our innovation center there, one of our team members showed me a forever mouse with the comparison to a watch. This is a nice watch, not a super expensive watch, but I’m not planning to throw that watch away ever. So why would I be throwing my mouse or my keyboard away if it’s a fantastic-quality, well-designed, software-enabled mouse. The forever mouse is one of the things that we’d like to get to."
[...]
"It was a little heavier, it had great software and services that you’d constantly update, and it was beautiful. So I don’t think we’re necessarily super far away from that."
[...]
"Imagine it’s like your Rolex. You’re going to really love that."
Faber argued the whole thing under the guise of sustainability. After all, fewer mice would be thrown away, which would benefit the environment. Defects and new technology such as sensors are left out of the equation.
Denial
However, the outrage over PC peripherals for which you may have to pay a monthly subscription was huge. There were thousands of comments on the interview excerpt on Reddit alone.
Logitech then rowed back. In an official statement, which is also available to heise online, the manufacturer writes
"There are no plans for a subscription mouse. The 'Forever Mouse' mentioned is not an actual product, but merely an insight into provocative internal thoughts on future possibilities for more sustainable consumer electronics."
