Many Garmin smartwatches are stuck in a boot loop after a faulty update. Affected watches show a blue triangle, which some internet users jokingly refer to as the “Triangle of Death”. Others are not in the mood for jokes: affected Garmin watches can no longer be used.
Reports of the errors can be found in forums and on Reddit. According to these, current watches from the Forerunner, Venu, Fenix and Epix series show errors with boot loops. The background to the boot loop is apparently a faulty update that Garmin has distributed in the past few days. Garmin is aware of the error and has published a proposed solution on its website.
“We are aware of the situation where some devices get stuck on the home screen or in a blue triangle,” Garmin writes there. “To resolve this, press and hold the power button until the device turns off, then turn it back on and sync it with the Garmin Connect app or Garmin Express.” Garmin has not yet commented further on the problem via its official channels.
Other possible solutions
However, the solution published by Garmin does not seem to help all those affected. Other suggested solutions for the boot loop problem are circulating in the community, ranging from resetting to factory settings to the targeted deletion of a specific file. Specifically, it is a corrupted version of the GPE.bin file that has been identified as the trigger for the boot loops.
Meanwhile, Garmin no longer seems to be distributing the faulty update. It is difficult to estimate how long the update was available for download and how many of the Swiss company's smartwatches are actually affected by the problems.
