Microsoft: Installation error on Server 2019 of the May security updates

Following initial reports from readers, Microsoft has now also confirmed that the May Patchday security updates are failing on many Windows Server 2019 systems. Admins are seeing the error number 0x800f0982. The Redmond company already suspects a cause.
Microsoft has included an entry in the Windows Release Health notes for Windows Server 2019 that discusses the problem. According to this, when attempting to install the May 14 security patches, the installation may be aborted with error code 0x800f0982. "The problem is more likely to occur on devices that do not have the English language pack (English, United States) installed," the developers explain.
Installation errors also under Windows 10
Some customers have reported installation errors for the KB5037765 update under Windows 10 Build 1809. This is unlikely to affect home users, as the Home and Pro versions of this Windows build have already reached the end of support in 2020. However, there are still supported Enterprise and LTSC versions that enjoy extended support.
Microsoft's developers are working on a solution that they want to release as soon as possible, according to the bug report. Specifically affected are Windows 10 1809, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 as well as Windows Server 1809 and Windows Server 2019.
Microsoft is not naming a temporary countermeasure. However, as systems are apparently more likely to be affected if the language pack for English (United States) is missing, it may help to install it and then try to install the security update again.
The regular Microsoft Patchday took place on Wednesday night. The manufacturer provides a bundle of security fixes for its numerous products and services. Security vulnerabilities in Windows have already been attacked in the wild, for example to distribute QakBot drones. It is therefore important to install the updates.
