Barmer Krankenkasse now offers online courses to promote neighborhood support for people in need of care. The aim is to take better account of the increasing need for support for people in need of care, particularly in rural areas. This is according to a press release from Barmer.
Participants who successfully complete the courses receive a certificate at the end. According to Barmer, this certifies that they have in-depth knowledge of volunteer help for people in need of care. With this certificate, helpers can officially register for neighborhood assistance with the recognition offices of the federal states. In this way, people in need of care can finance their private helpers via the monthly care insurance relief amount.

Barmer's e-learning courses on the Barmer Neighborhood Care Portal are available free of charge to all interested parties. The courses are designed to cover all areas of knowledge that are important for voluntary neighborhood assistance. This includes basic information about care insurance, the classification of the terms illness, dementia and disability, as well as the role of a helper in the home of someone in need of care. There is also training on what to do in the event of a domestic or medical emergency.
In contrast to private providers, who also offer courses for neighbourhood helpers, the difference, according to Barmer, lies in the course content – Barmer's courses cover the state regulations and are recognized by the federal states. “While the private providers usually only offer a general neighborhood helper course, Barmer's offer considers the federal state-specific regulations and concludes with a knowledge test. This is designed to ensure that the content taught has been understood. In Germany, neighborhood assistance is not possible in every federal state,” says Barmer on request.
Certificate as proof
According to Barmer, the requirements for the content of the qualification also differ “considerably in some cases”. This means that participants can be sure that they meet the formal requirements for neighborhood assistance with the certificate. “We see great potential in neighborhood assistance for people in need of care. Private helpers can prepare themselves well for the requirements with the course,” says Barmer CEO Christoph Straub.
