The AI research tool NotebookLM is currently only accessible via the browser. Google promises that an "app" will be coming soon.
Due to its user interface, Google's AI research tool is basically predestined to be used as a web interface. Especially since the introduction of the new, three-column view and if you want to use all the functions. Google now also wants to deliver an app for the AI tool.
NotebookLM: Native apps probably for Android and iOS
However, the announced app will not necessarily be a native application for desktops. This is because Google is not known for developing dedicated apps for Windows, macOS or Linux. Instead, it will probably be solutions for Android and iOS.
One of the advantages of a mobile app would be discoverability in Google Play on Android and in the App Store for iPhones. A native app could also eliminate the weaknesses of NotebookLM's mobile website on smartphones. This is because it sometimes leads to overlapping UI elements and bright status bars.
If you don't want to wait for the NotebookLM app, you can already place the tool on the home screen as a progressive web app. On Android, this can be done via the three-dot menu in Chrome and on iOS via the share menu in Safari. However, this is not a substitute for a native app.
NotebookLM: The range of functions is growing
Since the launch of NotebookLM in July 2023, Google has continuously developed its AI research tool. You can chat with the tool and ask it about sources, add notes and create an interactive mind map. The tool can even be used to generate podcasts based on texts.
Most recently, the research tool was given full access to the web to make it easier to search for sources.
