Prorussian DDoS attacks on Swiss institutions
Swiss institutions have been under DDoS attack since Tuesday. The perpetrator is the pro-Russian collective "NoName057(16)".
The pro-Russian group “NoName057(16)” specializes in DDoS attacks. It specifies target servers that it wants to bring to their knees with overload attacks with the help of voluntary supporters, i.e., a huge number of network requests, and make them inaccessible to regular users. Since Tuesday of this week, Swiss institutions have been the focus of the criminal group from Russia.
The Russian activists want to attract attention during the World Economic Forum, which is currently taking place in Davos, Switzerland, from January 20 to 24. The targets change, for example, the websites of several banks were initially unavailable.
Attacks on changing servers
The group is said to be boasting about the attacks on Telegram. The DDoS tracker for NoName057(16) there shows that numerous government services and websites are currently being attacked by the criminal organization. Various subdomains of admin.ch, the Swiss government domain, are currently listed there.
According to the Swiss daily Tagesanzeiger, the group is said to have claimed responsibility for the attacks with the words “We are continuing to test the resilience of the Swiss Internet infrastructure”. The Swiss Federal Office for Cybersecurity had expected such attacks during the World Economic Forum. The authority categorized the DDoS attacks as a kind of demonstration by the attackers.
The gang NoName057(16) is no stranger. Last December, for example, it and its henchmen called for similar actions against German companies. There were no ransom demands there either, but the attacks were also intended as a political message. As with the Swiss institutions, the list of target servers appeared to be random.
