The number of advertised top management jobs in IT fell by 46% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to an analysis by the recruiting service provider Index, which is available to the iX editorial team. According to the study, there were only 944 C-level positions in 2024 compared to 1749 in 2023. According to the index, 2022 (1787) and 2021 (1546) were also at a significantly higher level. The number of top IT positions advertised has therefore returned to roughly pre-coronavirus levels.
"Due to the difficult overall economic situation, most companies are currently focusing on sales issues. Changes in IT management positions are therefore being postponed in some cases," commented Index head JĂĽrgen Grenz on the results. Index has also identified a decline in IT job advertisements across all hierarchy levels for 2024, although this will be less drastic at ten percent. The number has fallen from 868,000 jobs in 2023 to just under 780,000 in 2024. Other analyses have already pointed to a certain cooling of the IT job market, such as the latest STEM Autumn Report from the German Economic Institute.
Headcount shrinkage in all sectors
The index analysis also shows fewer advertised top positions across all sectors. According to the study, companies and public institutions only advertised 45,000 positions for managing directors and board members nationwide in 2024 – almost a fifth fewer than in the previous year. Companies have become more cautious and are much less likely to fill top positions, explained Index head Grenz.
According to the index, there had previously been a multi-year growth trend in top management positions in the economy as a whole. In 2023, over 56,000 such positions were still publicly advertised. There were 51,000 job offers in 2022 and around 44,000 positions in 2021.
However, the labor market researchers at Index also point out that they only analyzed publicly advertised top positions. However, many C-level jobs are filled internally or via personal networks and headhunters. According to Index, 201 print media, 330 online job exchanges, the job portal of the Federal Employment Agency and 900,000 company websites were used for the analysis.
