Teardown of the new iPad mini: Jelly Scrolling apparently improved by software
Following improvements to the jelly scrolling effect, many suspected a change to the screen of the new iPad mini. A teardown now provides clarity.

Apple has managed to noticeably reduce the so-called jelly scrolling effect on the display of the new iPad mini. However, this is not the result of a hardware change, as the repair service provider iFixit has now discovered when unscrewing a seventh-generation device. Overall, the service rates the repairability of Apple's smallest iPad rather poorly, although there is also praise for some components.
Jelly scrolling is the term used to describe a display phenomenon in which parts of the image build up with a slight delay when scrolling. This effect, caused by the build-up from left to right, is known as jelly scrolling due to its wobbly appearance. Users perceive it subjectively in different ways – some are bothered by it, others do not notice the phenomenon at all.
CT scan provides clarity
Jelly scrolling is much less visible on the new iPad mini, as initial tests by heise online confirm. Nevertheless, it has not completely disappeared, as iFixit now also emphasizes. There, the position and alignment of the display driver was suspected to be the cause of the effect and its elimination. However, a CT scan revealed that the display driver is still in the same place. Apple must therefore have solved the problem using a trick, iFixit suspects.
Other discoveries from the teardown include the fact that the same battery is installed in the new Mini as in the previous model from 2021. The model number and the capacity of 19.19 Wh are identical, according to the video. The battery is also said to be easily accessible. The device's USB-C port is easily accessible and replaceable. This is commendable, as the device does not support wireless charging. For repairability and the environment, it is also an advantage that Apple uses many identical parts across the model generations –, although the few changes are more of a point of criticism from the perspective of some interested parties.
Poor score for repairability
Nevertheless, the iPad mini only receives 3 out of 10 points for its repairability. The reason for this is that the IPS display is glued in place and all other components are located behind it. The screen is difficult to remove without damaging it. There is also criticism that Apple itself does not provide any spare parts or manuals for the Mini. Apple does offer a self-service repair program. However, the iPad is not yet covered by this.
