Valve breaks silence: Steam page for mysterious online shooter "Deadlock"
After months of silence, Valve has given the online shooter "Deadlock" its own Steam page – albeit with minimal information.
Unofficial information about Valve's upcoming online shooter "Deadlock" has been circulating on social media for months, but the publisher has so far remained silent. But now Valve has apparently given "Deadlock" an official Steam page after all, albeit with minimal information. On the page, Valve is listed as the game's developer and publisher. However, there are no concrete details about the gameplay or a release date. Instead, there is only the indication that the game is in an early stage of development: "Deadlock is in early development with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay. Access is currently limited to friend invite via our playtesters.". However, Valve promises an announcement "soon".
The only visual teaser shown is an animated image. In terms of system requirements, the only mention so far is that Deadlock requires a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit operating system.
"Deadlock" was an open secret
Even though Valve had remained silent for a long time, the existence of the game had long been an open secret. Gameplay scenes have been circulating on the internet for months. As statistics from the unofficial Steam database SteamDB show, around 64,000 people now play the shooter at peak times.
Since the beginning of August, the number of players has increased significantly – Valve is apparently now distributing more invitation links. So far, these are the only way to gain access to "Deadlock". There is no official way. This type of soft launch is rather unusual for Valve, but is possibly intended as a kind of guerrilla marketing campaign to generate targeted attention. After all, no one who received an invitation link had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. In the meantime, more and more representatives of the gaming press have already been able to play Deadlock via invitation links. According to initial impressions, Deadlock is a kind of mixture of Valve's team shooter Team Fortress 2 and Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch.
