Windows Server 2019: Updated security update fixes installation errors
The security update for Windows Server 2019 failed with error numbers 0x800f0982 and 0x80004005. An updated update is available.

Microsoft has released the security update KB5039705 for Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 1809 out of sequence, which replaces the faulty KB5037765. The old update package often could not be installed on the two operating systems, with Windows usually displaying 0x800f0982 as the error number.
Microsoft initially identified a missing "English (USA)" language pack as the cause. However, installing this did not help in every case. As Microsoft later added in the Windows Release Health notes, the update could also fail with the installed language pack with another error number, 0x80004005.
Microsoft solves problem with update from update
Microsoft has now solved the problem out of turn with an updated update with the number KB5039705. It replaces the faulty update and raises the build number of the operating system to 17763.5830. Microsoft writes in the associated KB entry: "This update does not contain more security updates than were available in KB5037765 dated May 14, 2024. After you install this OOB [Out of Band Update], you will need to restart your device."
Microsoft is making the update available on all channels: via Microsoft and Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, the Microsoft Update Catalog and WSUS. IT managers for whom the updates initially failed should quickly download and apply the updates that have now been made available.
Last week, Microsoft confirmed that the installation of the May software patches on Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 Build 1809 may fail. There has been no solution so far. Microsoft also did not mention the potential workaround of installing the missing language pack later.
