iOS 18 rumors: AI features and changed home screen
Apple will be presenting its next iPhone operating system in just under two weeks. Now there is more information on the AI and usability content of the update.

The time has come: Apple's developer conference this year starts on June 10. The new operating systems will be on show at WWDC 2024. Particularly exciting this time: What AI functions will iOS 18 and co. receive? Can Apple fulfill the hopes of Wall Street and users? At the weekend, the financial news agency Bloomberg provided new rumor fodder. It also concerns changes to the interface of the iPhone software.
More customization options for the home screen
A redesigned home screen will not only allow icons to be placed freely, but will allegedly also allow them to be colored as desired. For example, it would be possible to give financial app icons a green color. So far, this has only been possible with shortcuts and custom icons. How exactly the coloring is done - and how aggressive it is - is still unclear.
When it comes to icon placement, it will be interesting to see how closely Apple's current, strict grid specifications will have to be adhered to, or whether they will actually be lifted. These align icons in a certain way, but now also allow widgets that move the icons.
AI functions in ten areas
Bloomberg also reports on at least ten areas in which Apple will place AI functions in iOS 18. These include an AI-powered search in Safari, an improved Spotlight system search with AI help, more natural interactions with Siri without having to know all the commands, an intelligent summary of notifications, messages from other users, documents, notes or websites and a new photo retouching function with AI.
The voice memo app will be able to transcribe recordings with AI and the Siri version for the Apple Watch will be more optimized for on-the-go tasks. Finally, Apple is also planning AI features for developers in Xcode, as known from GitHub Copilot, and is planning AI-generated special emojis "for every occasion". Many of the new AI features are reportedly initially planned as "preview" versions - at least as part of the iOS 18 beta phase, which is expected to last until September. It is still unclear whether Apple will choose an AI partner. Most recently, there were indications that it could be OpenAI.
