iOS 18: How Apple is redesigning the home screen
Apple's next iPhone operating system will change a lot in terms of home screen design. An overview.

Apple had already created the option of distributing widgets on the home screen with iOS 14. With iOS 17, these became interactive for the first time. Now, with iOS 18, Apple is planning a whole series of further innovations regarding the configuration of the home screen. Some of these features have been familiar from Android for years, but are wholly new for iPhone users.
Night mode and coloring
There will already be changes to the widgets in iOS 18. You can now control their size directly from the home screen by pressing and holding on them and then dragging. If you use night mode (dark mode) on the iPhone, there will be separate icons for this in the future, which have been visually adapted - Apple has already implemented them for the vast majority of system apps in the current iOS 18 beta.
Icons can also be colored (Tint). This gives all displayed icons the same color, allowing them to be adapted to the background image, for example. However, this may not be obvious in some circumstances. For the first time, icons can also be adjusted in size. This makes the icons larger, but four icons still fit in a row. However, if the larger icons are active, the description label below them is removed. So you have to know what you are clicking on.
Home screen with holes, hide or lock apps
Furthermore, you can now make the home screen more airy for the first time. Instead of filling each individual area with either icons or widgets, you can now leave spaces. To achieve this, simply move icons or widgets. If you like, you can, for example, only fill the first home screen with the most essential apps.
Apps on the home screen can now also be completely hidden or at least locked with iOS 18. This is done via the context menu (long press). If an app is hidden, it can only be accessed via the app library. It is also biometrically protected and notifications (or calls for communication apps) are no longer received. Alternatively, apps can also just be blocked. In this case, biometric approval must be obtained before launch. In the current beta versions of iOS 18, some Apple apps cannot (yet?) be hidden and/or locked.
