ARM devkit: Mini PC with the most powerful Snapdragon X Elite
Microsoft and Qualcomm are jointly launching a mini PC as a devit for Windows on ARM. The Snapdragon X Elite is pushed to the limit.

The ARM processor Snapdragon X Elite is not only used in notebooks. In cooperation with Microsoft, Qualcomm is launching a mini PC that is primarily intended for developing apps for Windows on ARM. Apart from that, the "Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows" can of course be used like a normal desktop PC.
Unlike the 2023 devkit version, the successor no longer has "Microsoft Surface" branding, but one from Qualcomm. There is a huge leap in the inner workings: With its 12 Oryon cores, the Snapdragon X Elite is considerably faster than the previous Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 with four Cortex-X1 and Cortex-A78 cores each.

Fast and inefficient
A variant is used that is not found in any notebook. The Snapdragon X Elite in the X1E-00-1DE version has a maximum dual-core boost of 4.3 GHz, 100 MHz more than the fastest notebook version. It should also be able to maintain its clock frequencies for a particularly long time with a high-power limit of 80 watts – at the expense of efficiency and noise.
Qualcomm accommodates 32 GByte LPDDR5X RAM in the new devkit, which is permanently soldered. The ARM version of Windows 11 is pre-installed on a 512 GB SSD. Microsoft also provides all kinds of development tools, runtimes, libraries and frameworks.
USB4 and Wi-Fi 7 included
The Mini PC is sparsely equipped on the connection side. There are two USB4 ports including DisplayPort mode for monitors, two USB Type A ports (unclear whether USB 3.2 Gen 1 or Gen 2), HDMI (unclear whether HDMI 2.0 or 2.1), Gigabit Ethernet and an audio jack. The system communicates wirelessly via Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The housing is made of plastic; the DC power supply unit is located externally. The manufacturer also shows pictures of a version in a transparent housing.
Qualcomm will be shipping the mini PC from June 18, 2024, at a cost of 900 US dollars, the equivalent of just under 990 euros including tax. So far, interested parties can express their interest via an online form.
