Apple Intelligence: These devices are getting the new AI functions

With iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, Apple plans to introduce the first Apple Intelligence functions from the fall. However, certain devices are required to use features such as generative AI for texts and images, the transcription of voice notes and phone calls or - presumably from 2025 – the significantly improved voice assistant Siri.

Support is limited to Apple Silicon machines for the Mac and to certain SoCs for the iPhone and iPad. According to the current state of knowledge, Apple's HomePod series speakers will have to make do without Apple Intelligence if they cannot use an iPhone or other device. Other possible Apple Intelligence devices

Four new Generation 16 iPhones with A18 SoC and new MacBook Pro models with M4 are expected in the fall, and possibly other Mac models too. All are factory-equipped for Apple Intelligence. This is also likely to apply to every other cell phone or tablet and every other computer. However, it should be borne in mind that Apple Intelligence will initially only be available in US English in the fall; German and other language regions will not be covered until 2025.

There is also a regulatory problem: Apple has threatened not to launch its AI services in the European Union for the time being due to the Digital Markets Act. It remains to be seen whether this will be implemented via a geoblock or simply has to do with the country of origin of the Apple ID. It is not yet clear whether the Apple Watch will be supplied with Apple Intelligence, but it is likely to lack sufficient main memory. Apple Intelligence for Vision Pro is expected next year; the headset meets the technical requirements.
