The official Raspberry Pi display from 2015 is getting a successor. The Touch Display 2 remains at a size of seven inches, but has a significantly higher resolution: It displays 1280 × 720 pixels in 16:9 format, meaning it has a pixel density of 210 pixels per inch (ppi), presumably with IPS technology.

The previous model made do with 800 × 480 pixels in a rare 5:3 format. The pixel density was significantly lower at 133 ppi. The thick plastic frame is also retained on the new screen.

The Touch Display 2 does away with the additional circuit board. Instead, it is connected directly via the Display Serial Interface (DSI) connector. The screen is powered via the GPIO strip.

The model is compatible with all Raspi single-board computers with a DSI connection, i.e. from the Raspberry Pi 1B+ and including the current Raspi 5. The Touch-Display 2 does not work on the Zero variants due to the lack of a DSI connection.

Raspberry Pi Plc. has integrated the software drivers directly into the Raspberry Pi OS, including 5-finger support, on-screen keyboard and the ability to rotate image content. The manufacturer lists DIY tablets, entertainment systems and information dashboards as possible projects.

Good news for all those who want to use the Touch-Display 2 for commercial projects: Raspberry Pi Plc. promises that the screen will be manufactured until at least January 2030.

The recommended retail price is 60 US dollars, the equivalent of around 65 to 70 euros including 19 percent VAT (not included in US prices). The previous Raspi screen costs (starting from 61,90 €) just as much.

One retailer already lists the Touch-Display 2. Others should follow soon. The first model will remain available for the time being.
