According to a report by the US news agency Bloomberg, the next version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 18.2, will be released at the beginning of December – and therefore earlier than expected. The update will primarily contain additional functions of the artificial intelligence Apple Intelligence. One focus is on image generation.
As Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman writes, he expects a release in the week beginning December 2. This would be slightly earlier than the corresponding software updates in previous years. iOS 17.2 will be released on December 11, 2023, iOS 16.2 on December 13, 2022. However, Gurman cautions that the schedule could still shift if unexpected delays occur.
Image Playground, Genmoji and Image Wand
The first published developer beta of iOS 18.2 includes the AI image functions Image Playground, Genmoji and Image Wand for the first time. Genmojis are AI-generated personal emojis that can be sent in the Messages app, for example. In the Image Playground app, illustrations and graphics can be created using templates, contacts in the address book and keystrokes. Image Wand is an extension of the drawing tools that can be found in the Notes app, for example. Line drawings can be converted into images by drawing around them with the Apple Pencil or your finger. It is also possible to describe an image to the AI, which is then created as a type of clipart.

With iOS 18.2, Apple is also introducing the option of forwarding AI requests to ChatGPT. This means that entire texts can be created based on keywords, for example. 16-generation iPhones with the new camera control will have access to the announced Visual Intelligence for the first time. This enables the devices to identify objects and locations based on camera images.
EU users will have to be patient until April
For the time being, however, the AI functions are only available to users who have activated US English or, in future, other English language variants. For citizens in the European Union, the Apple Intelligence functions are still not available with iOS 18.2 for the time being. Apple has promised a release in April 2025.
EU users will be able to delete other Apple apps such as the App Store, Safari, the Camera app, Photos and Messages with 18.2. Apple is also opening up the system for alternative browser engines for the first time.
