Habeck: Intel billions can be used for budget restructuring
The subsidies for the chip factory put on hold by Intel could flow into the federal budget and therefore not into other technology projects.
Remains a vision for the time being: Intel's chip factory in Magdeburg.

The 10 billion euros in funding from the Climate and Transformation Fund for the chip factory in Magdeburg, which Intel has put on hold, could flow into the federal budget next year. This was announced by Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) on Monday afternoon at a press conference on the state of the coalition in Berlin, which was arranged at short notice.
Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had called for this again last week in a controversial position paper on the realignment of economic and financial policy. The paper summarizes largely familiar FDP positions, but at the same time fuels the dispute over direction within the coalition.
Chip factory on ice
In late summer, the US chip giant Intel postponed its plans for chip production in Magdeburg by at least two years, despite massive funding commitments from the EU and the German government.

The federal budget for 2025 is currently being debated. According to the schedule, an agreement should actually be reached between the budget politicians in the Bundestag on Thursday. It is currently uncertain whether the coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP will reach an agreement.
Considering the disputes over economic policy and the federal budget for the coming year, the closest leadership circle of the "traffic light" coalition met again on Monday. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Federal Economics Minister and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) met at the Chancellery in Berlin on Monday. A coalition committee is also planned for Wednesday.
