The first-person horror shooter "Forgive me Father 2" is finished: After a year in Early Access on Steam, the Polish studio Byte Barrel has completed its sequel to the first part. The game is an old-school first-person shooter: In order to get a grip on your own madness, you end up in an insane asylum. Instead of therapy, you shoot your way through comic-like levels in Doom style, which borrow heavily from the dark worlds of H. P. Lovecraft. That's where the enemies seem to come from: undead figures, guys in prison garb, fat men in hats and monstrous figures with tentacles. As you progress through the levels, you acquire unusual abilities and all kinds of pistols, shotguns, precision rifles and rocket launchers – sometimes not quite of this world.

A dark atmosphere and monstrous creatures with tentacles characterize Forgive me Father 2. If you don't like splatter effects, you can switch off the blood in the settings.

The story is told in letters between the very different levels in the cell of the madhouse. But this is secondary, first and foremost you run through dark cathedrals, through the streets of a city, the foggy harbor area or try to survive in the trenches of a battlefield. Sinister figures lurk everywhere, seeking your life. The dark corners can only be illuminated with a twinkling flashlight, which goes out again after a short time and then has to be switched on again.

The recipe for survival is familiar from games like Doom: keep moving, collect armor and ammunition and decimate your enemies with the right weapon. The comic-like cel shader graphics take the edge off the omnipresent splatter. If you don't like this either, you can switch off the blood in the settings.

Then it's back to the insane asylum, where there is another clue to the background in your own cell. There is no multiplayer mode.

Forgive me Father 2 tells the background story in letters waiting in the cell in the asylum after the various levels.

"Forgive me Father 2" is an amazingly entertaining and varied gaming experience. The comic graphics ensure that the scenario is not taken too seriously. The metal soundtrack carries you through the hectic levels, but fortunately ebbs away in short periods of calm. Then there is time to take a deep breath, take a closer look at the surroundings and get your bearings. On Steam, this combination has earned the game a very positive rating overall.

"Forgive me Father 2" is available on Steam for Windows (around 25 euros), we played the title with Proton on Linux. It is also verified for the Steam Deck.
