Final Cut Pro: An update is expected this week
A major update to Apple's Final Cut Pro video editing software is apparently just around the corner. Why an announcement is expected this week.

Apple has already held out the prospect of initial functions: This week, it is now expected that the next version of the Final Cut Pro video editing software will be announced in concrete terms. The start of the annual Final Cut Pro User Summit gives reason for this assumption. The user summit takes place in cooperation with Apple and also includes the opportunity for participants to visit the headquarters in Apple Park.
It remains to be seen whether Apple will take a small version step from 10.8 to 10.9 in line with previous versions. Or whether Cupertino is planning a big leap to version 11 in view of the major new functions already announced. It is also still unclear whether Apple has update plans for the iPad version of Final Cut Pro.
AI subtitles and magnetic mask
Just recently, when the new Macs were unveiled at the end of October, Apple revealed a planned new feature. In future, Final Cut Pro will be able to automatically generate subtitles for videos with the support of artificial intelligence. Previously, this required plug-ins or software from third-party manufacturers. As many creators produce for social media, there has long been a strong desire for Apple to provide an in-house solution. Apple has at least made it easy to switch from landscape to portrait format (vertical) in Final Cut Pro: existing landscape format projects can be duplicated. Smart recognition arranges image sections and titles so that everything important is in the visible area.
Another function that was spotted during the Mac presentation was a magnetic mask. This could be used to mask moving objects in the foreground and, for example, place a caption in front of the background but behind this masked object. Isolated color corrections and other changes that are limited to selected objects would also be possible.
Functions for spatial videos
Back in June, Apple announced new functions for Final Cut Pro together with visionOS 2, which should make it possible to edit spatial videos. Corresponding video material can already be recorded with the iPhone 15 Pro and all iPhones in the 16-series, among others. Apple also announced the possibility of adding immersive titles and effects in the future. With these new functions, Apple presumably wants to ensure that more spatial videos are produced for the Vision Pro.
There was already an update for Final Cut Pro in June 2024, which was announced in May. This included multicam support and AI functions.
