Google has released a new experimental AI tool called "Learn About" for selected users in the USA. It differs from the well-known chatbots such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini in that it specializes in educational answers, which it enriches with images and interactive elements.
Those who have already tried it out report that its answers are more like a textbook. It motivates them to think outside the box and deepen their knowledge. The tool is also visually reminiscent of teaching materials, for example by displaying info boxes that provide context or offer additional topics.
Based on LearnLM
"Learn About" is based on the LearnLM Large Language Model (LLM) and therefore not on the Gemini models that Google usually uses. According to Google, LearnLM was trained more intensively with data from the fields of education and research. It has also been tailored more closely to the way people learn. Despite the similar-looking input field, the feedback differs significantly from classic chatbots, according to initial tests.

The AI tool aims to help the user to fully understand topics. It should also be better protected against hallucinating answers if it cannot find suitable ones. Users can ask questions, upload images or view previously curated topics. Interactive lists are designed to make complex answers easier to understand.
One of two tools
"Learn about" is one of two tools based on LearnLM that were introduced by Google in the spring. The other is called Illuminate and is used to break down research papers into short audio conversations. Within a few minutes, it can reproduce audio material with two AI-generated voices in conversation and thus provide easier access to complex work.
