Grok is set to make it big: First tests with free AI access
The Grok AI model, which is being developed by Elon Musk's company xAI, is apparently opening its paywall. Initial tests are underway.
Until now, access to the AI chatbot Grok was closely linked to a paid premium subscription to the social network X (formerly Twitter). The AI was seen by the operators as added value to enhance the premium offer. Now xAI, the development company founded by Elon Musk, is apparently making preparations to make the chatbot available to users free of charge in future.
According to TechCrunch, initial tests are taking place in New Zealand. At the weekend, X reported that Grok would also be open to users in other regions on a trial basis. By partially opening up to free users, as practiced by competitors Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, Grok could increase its reach and awareness. At the same time, the developers would receive more feedback, which they could use to further develop the AI.
Limits for free users
However, the use of Grok is to be limited for users who do not pay. For example, only ten questions can be asked of Grok-2 every two hours. Free users who use the Grok-2 mini model can submit 20 queries every two hours. Three images per day can be analyzed with the AI.

Rumor has it that interested parties must have had an X account linked to a telephone number for more than a week.
Grok-2 was launched in August
Grok-2 was launched in August. Unlike its predecessor, the current AI model can also generate images. After its release, it made a name for itself primarily due to its lack of limitations, which made it possible to show US politicians in fictitious images firing weapons or snorting cocaine, for example, which is not possible with competitors' AI models, or at least not easily. In addition, the current model has improved its ability to write and generate code.
