Gdata: Update problems in the Telekom network

Gdata 's antivirus protection is currently experiencing sporadic problems when downloading antivirus updates. The manufacturer confirmed the problem to heise online.

"During the course of yesterday, we received a number of inquiries from customers reporting connection problems to our update servers," explained a company spokesperson. The confirmed problems occurred on Monday of this week. Gdata had "checked its own infrastructure for irregularities that could explain the problems described. This check did not reveal any anomalies".

Update problems: Remedy through router restarts

"In some cases, we received positive feedback on the advice to restart the router once," added the company spokeswoman. The Internet provider Telekom was found to be the common factor among the customers who reported this problem. As far as we know so far, only Telekom customers seem to be affected by the problem.

Gdata went on to explain: "We have since been able to successfully recreate this constellation and have seen the same error (no connection on port 443 to the update server). However, when tested again, everything worked normally."

Accordingly, "the problem does not appear to be widespread or only occurring sporadically, and only with one provider. We are of course continuing to monitor the situation," Gdata concludes the statement.

It remains unclear whether the problems are no longer occurring or whether users of Gdata's virus protection are still occasionally unable to reach the update servers. It is also unknown whether customers with other internet providers are affected,

Problems with the accessibility of update servers are rather unusual. In the past, problems were more likely to occur due to error detection or overzealous deletion routines, which then put the operating system out of action, for example. Avira last experienced such a problem during the Christmas period last year.
