Sony has introduced the new FE 28-70 mm F2 GM lens together with the Alpha 1 Mark II. The standard zoom has a continuous open aperture of f/2.0 across the entire zoom range. Sony promises an image quality that comes close to that of fixed focal lengths and advertises it for various applications such as portrait, wedding and sports photography.
In terms of optical construction, Sony uses 20 lenses in 14 groups and an aperture unit with eleven blades, which is intended to ensure a soft bokeh. Super ED and ED glass elements are designed to correct chromatic aberrations. The closest focusing distance is 38 centimetres and the maximum magnification is 0.23.
Autofocus
The FE 28-70 mm F2 GM has four linear motors that drive the focus unit and ensure reliable focus tracking. In combination with the Alpha 9 III, the focus is also tracked at 120 frames per second and when zooming. The lens should also deliver this performance when shooting video at a high frame rate (4K 120p or FHD 240p).

Control elements
The FE 28-70 mm F2 GM has three adjustment rings for focus, zoom and aperture. The click-stop function on the aperture ring can be switched off if required. There are also two customizable focus hold buttons, an aperture lock switch and an AF/MF switch. The lens is sealed against dust and moisture for use in adverse conditions.
The new Sony FE 28-70 mm F2 GM will be available from December 2024 for €3,600.
