Bluesky now with 20 million accounts and probably almost as active as Threads
Bluesky is still significantly smaller than Threads in absolute terms. Thanks to the latest additions, however, there's apparently almost as much going on there.

More than 20 million accounts have now been created on the short messaging service Bluesky, with four million added since Friday alone. This means that the competitor for X is now growing almost as fast as Threads from Meta, where one million accounts are added every day. Although Bluesky still has less than a tenth of the number of Threads users, according to the analysis company Similarweb, the gap in the number of daily hits has shrunk. While X has ten times as many daily active users as Bluesky in the USA, Threads only has one and a half times as many – users , at least on a particularly active day. Threads CEO Adam Mosseri has rejected the figures and assured that the company is far ahead. However, Threads' internal figures are not public.
The great migration between social networks
According to Similarweb, Bluesky overtook Threads in terms of website traffic in the USA more than a month ago. The service is now far ahead here, only just behind Threads worldwide. The background to this development is therefore also a large wave of people leaving X since the US election. On the day of Donald Trump's victory, Elon Musk's short messaging service counted more hits than ever before under the US billionaire's leadership. However, never before had so many accounts been deactivated in one day. However, the analysis company does not have access to internal figures, but relies on various sources and app access statistics.

Bluesky itself was once again delighted to reach the latest milestone. Company boss Jay Graber pointed out that the company only employs 20 people, but will be hiring more in view of its success. Her service released an update at around the same time, which is intended to significantly improve performance, among other things. Meanwhile, the growth continues, with several prominent accounts from Austria on X being shut down more or less simultaneously at the beginning of the week, with the celebrities responsible switching to Bluesky. This was organized by the well-known news presenter Armin Wolf.
Over the past few days, Bluesky has established itself as the most important Twitter alternative alongside Threads, with Mastodon trailing behind in third place. Thousands of so-called starter packs, i.e. user-generated collections of accounts that can be followed with a single click, help with the mass migration. Overall, however, all three services are benefiting from the drop-off in Elon Musk's short messaging service. They are also not completely in competition with each other; in the first states, Threads accounts can be connected directly to Mastodon and the so-called Fediverse. Bluesky can also be connected to Mastodon, with the link even working in both directions.
