The short message service Threads from the US social media company Meta has gained 35 million new users since the beginning of this month. A Meta spokesperson quoted this figure to the news portal Axios.
Since the presidential elections in the United States on 5 November, numerous users, as well as sports clubs, political parties and other organizations, have turned their backs on the social network X and switched to its competitors Threads or Bluesky. X owner Elon Musk supported former and now re-elected US President Donald Trump during the US election campaign. Last week, Bluesky declared that it already had 20 million accounts. Recently, almost one million users have been added every day. Threads is reporting similar growth figures. According to its spokesperson, the app has been recording more than one million registrations per day for three months now.

Meta opened Threads a year and a half ago, initially for the world outside Europe, and before the turn of the year also in the European Union (EU). Since its launch with record numbers, the platform has been growing at a rapid pace. At the end of last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the Q3 2024 earnings conference call that Threads has over 275 million monthly active users. Threads has recently introduced several new features. For example, after a short test phase, the social network made custom feeds available to everyone. With custom feeds, users can follow topics and accounts in a single feed. Threads also wants to show more posts from followed users in the future. This was announced by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri last week. From January, Meta's Twitter alternative will then supposedly run with advertising – and thus monetize the short messaging service, much earlier than announced after its launch.
