The smartphone app for the AI assistant Gemini is now available for Google Workspace. In addition to chat as a research tool, users will be able to use the camera to transfer handwritten notes to Google Docs or Gmail, or to convert drawn diagrams into digital graphics. The privacy settings from Google Workspace will be applied.
Users can download Gemini for Android and iOS from the respective stores. Apps that are already installed must be version 15.42 or higher in order to be able to log in via the Google Workspace account. Not all functions of the web version of Gemini are currently available in the app. For example, it is not possible to send files to the AI assistant. Gems also lacks Gemini's topic-based chatbots and the smartphone app does not yet support Android work profiles.
Gemini is released for all users within an organization. Administrators can deactivate app access in the device management. There are no other settings. The Gemini app is available for all workspace levels, as well as customers with the Gemini add-ons Business, Enterprise, Education and Education Premium. Deployment of the functions has already started in both the Rapid and Scheduled Release.
Making calls in Google Chat
You can now start phone calls with chat partners from Google Chat. The so-called huddles are available in both individual and group chats and rooms. Although users start the call via the video icon, it is an audio transmission by default. The transmission of webcam or screen content can be activated at any time. This should enable spontaneous collaborations without having to invite participants to a video conference in Google Meet.

In the background, the new huddles continue to rely on Google Meet. If the conference service is deactivated within a domain, users cannot start huddles in Google Chat. Regardless of this, users can still be invited to a conversation and join it. The telephony function is coming to all Workspace editions except the Education level. The rollout is already underway in the Rapid Release, the Scheduled Release begins on January 6.
