Sony names Playstation 2 the best-selling games console of all time
Happy birthday! Shortly before the 30th anniversary of the first Playstation, Sony announces that the PS2 is the best-selling games console of all time.

The very first Playstation came onto the market on December 3, 1994, and in a few days the Sony Playstation brand will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. However, the undisputed king of Playstations is the PS2, which was released in 2000.
It was already known that the PS2 is the best-selling console of all time, but only now has Sony published more precise sales figures on a page set up especially for the anniversary. According to Sony, the PS2 has sold over 160 million units worldwide.
It is closely followed by the handheld console Nintendo DS with a good 154 million units sold. The PS1 only sold 102 million units.

One reason for the PS2's success was the Emotion Engine, a graphics processor that set new standards. The comparatively low price of 299 US dollars at the time also convinced many customers, as did the integrated DVD player.

Since its market launch in 2000, a large fan community has formed around the PS2. Some enthusiasts have made it their mission to install Linux on the PS2. And in the early 2000s, researchers in the USA combined 70 PS2s into a supercomputer to demonstrate the power of the games consoles.
