A quarter of employees use generative AI in their day-to-day work. This is according to a study by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt). Compared to the previous year, the proportion increased only slightly. GenAI applications are increasingly being used by young employees and those with a high level of education. Generative AI is not yet known to 20 percent of employees.

Two thirds of professional AI users receive useful results from the applications that save them working time. Artificial intelligence supports employees with difficult creative tasks in particular. More than half use AI tools at least once a week. They use ChatGPT by far the most, ahead of Google Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot, which is also based on ChatGPT.

Specially developed or customized AI systems are also becoming increasingly relevant in companies. They can be tailored to different needs and allow sensitive data to be protected. Just under a fifth of employees state that their employer already provides their own AI application. The majority of companies do not (yet) have guidelines and specifications for employees on the use of generative AI. Of the companies whose employees work with artificial intelligence, 44% have such regulations.

Only four percent of respondents fear that their own job will be replaced by generative AI systems in the next ten years. Last year, the figure was 11 percent. In contrast, almost 40 percent expect their jobs to change over this period. At the same time, half of those in employment do not expect artificial intelligence to have any impact on their own profession. The study also shows that it is primarily those employees who already work with the relevant tools who expect AI to bring about change. Although the respondents consider their own jobs to be secure, 55% of them assume that the use of generative AI will lead to job losses. The complete study is available on the bidt website.
